Data Science Seminar Series: Pablo Jensen

on the January 10, 2019

15:45 to 17:00
The Data Science Seminar Series bring high profile researchers to Université Grenoble Alpes to show the increasing role of data science in modern research. It is open to all researchers of Université Grenoble Alpes. For the 5th seminar of this year, we will welcome Pablo Jensen from ENS Lyon.
Pablo Jensen from ENS Lyon will give a talk on “The politics of social models”. The event will take place on Thursday 10 January at IM2AG building. The event will be followed by a coffee break.

Abstract

These last years have witnessed a significant rise of papers from physicists using simple models to understand social systems. The basic idea is to use the physicists’ expertise on the emergence of collective phenomena in condensed-matter : As the properties of materials emerge from the interactions between atoms, the characteristics of societies would emerge from interactions between individuals, taken as ‘social atoms’. In this presentation, I will take several examples to suggest that these micro-macro models have serious methodological and political problems. On the first point, they rely on internal coherence rather than validation or relevance for real social systems. From a political viewpoint, they assume by construction that agents are unable to understand and control collective phenomena: Ironically, a supposedly “bottom-up” approach leads to “top-down” politics.
